Course Introduction
«Most students believe that success in GCSE examinations depends almost entirely on how much they know. It doesn’t.»
Every year, thousands of marks are lost by students who actually know the content but fail to communicate it in the way examiners are looking for. They misinterpret questions, misunderstand command words, write too much in the wrong places, too little in the right places, lose marks through poor timing and fail to demonstrate the skills that GCSE examinations are specifically designed to assess.
HOW TO EXAM is designed to solve that problem.
Across five carefully structured sessions, students will learn how GCSE examinations really work and develop the techniques required to convert their knowledge into marks.
While revision remains important, this programme focuses on what happens once students sit down in the examination hall: understanding questions, applying knowledge efficiently, avoiding common mistakes and performing consistently under pressure.
Rather than simply helping students know more, this programme teaches them how to score more.
What Students Will Learn
Throughout the programme students will learn how to:
- Understand what examiners are actually looking for
- Decode command words quickly and accurately
- Interpret questions correctly
- Apply knowledge rather than simply recall it
- Structure answers to meet the assessment objectives
- Improve timing across different question types
- Recognise common examiner traps
- Avoid throwing away easy marks
- Develop confidence under examination pressure
- Perform consistently across every GCSE subject
The programme also incorporates revision skills needed to support examination success, including prioritising revision, identifying weaker topics and using effective study techniques during the weeks leading up to examinations.
Students will also receive:
Revision planning templates
Revision trackers
Progress monitoring tools
Checklists
Session recordings

Why Start In February?
By February, most students have already covered the majority of their GCSE content. From this point onwards, the greatest gains often come not from learning more information, but from learning how to use that knowledge more effectively inside the examination room.
Developing exam skills over several months allows students to practise, refine and embed these
techniques before their final GCSE papers, rather than trying to change habits during the final few weeks. The result is greater confidence, fewer avoidable mistakes and significantly stronger examination performance.
Why This Programme Is Di`erent
- Knowing the content is only one part of GCSE success
- The students who achieve the highest grades are usually those who combine strong subject knowledge with outstanding examination technique.
- Every examination board rewards particular skills: selecting the right information, applying knowledge appropriately, communicating clearly and managing time effectively.
- These are skills that can be mastered by everyone
- HOW TO EXAM provides students with a structured approach to developing those skills throughout the second half of Year 11, ensuring they enter their examinations with confidence, clarity and a proven strategy.
